Question: What Art Business Applications Do You Use?

Hey, fellow artists: What are your five favorite applications you use in either marketing or running your art business. These could be standard or mobile apps, but I’m looking for ones that you use on a regular basis. I’ve discussed this with a lot of people, and would love to have YOUR input as well for a future blog post I’ve been working on. You can either DM me on Twitter (@artistinthewild) or email me ( william@artistinthewild.com ). Thank you!

Thank You So Much for 10,000+ Views on YouTube!

Wow! I looked at my YouTube channel the other day, and saw that my videos have been watched more than 10,000 times. It is amazing to me. I don’t do anything to promote my channel (except for putting the videos on this blog occasionally), yet people from all over the globe have watched my videos. Interestingly, YouTube tells me I’m especially popular in India and Brazil—not sure why that is, but I love it.

That 10,000 people would watch what I do is insanely cool, and I very deeply appreciate each and every one of you. Thank you, and keep watching!

Trying Gamblin’s  New FastMatte Oil Paint

I recently had the opportunity to try painting with Gamblin’s cool new FastMatte product.

This is an oil paint specially formulated for underpainting.  It dries very quickly to a matt finish which is excellent for grabbing hold of subsequent paint layers. FastMatte will mix well with other, more traditional oil colors, and will speed their drying time as well.

I decided to do a quick oil sketch portrait to push this material a bit and see what it could do. While not quite as easy to blend as regular oils, it still works very well, and the drying time is (for oil paint) blazingly fast. This could be an amazingly good material for plein air work, and for studio painters who get a bit impatient (like moi!) waiting around for

underpaintings to dry. This material is definitely worth exploring for yourself.

I really enjoyed trying FastMatte, and want to thank Gamblin’s President Pete Cole for supplying me the samples of FastMatte I used for this post.

Thanks, everyone, for watching!      —W

Sea, Sky and Simplicity

Sea & Sky study (Oil on Canvas) ~~William Weith

The oceanscapes in my new home are amazingly restful, peaceful, and soothing.  This is the view from my deck looking out to sea.  The little island I live on sits atop a coral reef which extends  several miles out into the Atlantic.  The outside of this massive reef breaks the big waves before they come near the island.   The clear, bright aquamarine waters inside the reef are shallow, protected and astoundingly beautiful.

For me, the Lower Keys are all about the Sun, the Sky, and the Sea—simplicity itself.

Accordingly, I wanted to keep my painting gear simple, so I used only a painting knife and one blending brush.  I enjoy painting with the knife, as it’s marks add vibrance and energy to any piece, and the thick impasto strokes provide for some interesting textures.

This isn’t a formal painting, just a quick study of sea and sky in my new home. There really is something special about island life and the rhythms of the tides, sun, moon and stars. Such a great source for artistic creativity.
